I don't publish enough to make any money (I think I made 38 cents this year, a few years ago I made a buck or two every month).

To be honest - the only real reading on Medium seems to be by folks trying to learn how to make a buck on teaching others how to make a buck.

That's all fine - writers should be paid according to their quality or abilities, or what they offer the reader.

I decided to experiment with Substack, and I've found I have more reads, and that's good enough for now. I'm still learning and having fun.
